The fire started around 10:49 a.m. at the complex at 160 Church St., said Michael A. Caldaroni, assistant fire chief with the Bridgeport Fire Department.
When crews arrived they located a kitchen fire in apartment #413 that had been extinguished by the automatic sprinkler system. Fire damage to the kitchen was minimal, however, the sprinkler activation caused significant water damage to the apartment and to the three apartments immediately below, Caldaroni said.
A salvage operation was conducted by fire crews to limit the amount of damage. The electricity was disconnected to the apartments involved, causing the relocation of seven adults and three children, he added.
The American Red Cross was working with the families to find temporary housing.
The property management company called in maintenance employees and private contractors to make the necessary repairs.
A fire investigator also responded to the scene to determine the cause of the fire. No one was injured.
